Why Your ProtoLabs Injection Molding Quote Looks High (And What It Actually Costs)

The quote that made me question everything

Last month, one of our mechanical engineers forwarded me a ProtoLabs injection molding quote. The number was high. Not 'let's discuss' high. 'Did they accidentally add a zero?' high.

'Can we just 3D print it?' he asked. 'Or use the Nomad 3 desktop CNC mill in the lab? Or find someone doing CNC milling in Portland, OR?'

Your reputation. I report to operations and finance. When a vendor fails, it's not the vendor who looks bad. It's me. That unreliable supplier made me look bad to my VP when materials arrived late.

Only then do I compare quotes.

Looking back, I should have adopted this framework years ago. At the time, I thought procurement was about finding the best price. It's not. It's about reducing risk. Simple.

The bottom line

If you're staring at a ProtoLabs injection molding cost and wondering if it's worth it, you're asking the wrong question. The right question is: what will it cost if I choose someone else and they fail?

Sometimes the answer is 'not much.' In that case, go cheap. But when the answer is 'a lot,' the higher quote is actually the bargain.
